Mainly a self taught artist, however he did study with Jasper Cropsey in 1850. In 1851 he was in New Hampshire painting and so enjoyed the plein air painting there that he returned many times. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and the Artists Fund Society. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Assc., the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and the National Academy of Design. He won the Centennial Expo in Philadelphia in 1876 . He was based in NYC and made many trips through out New England but never visited Europe. He was one of the sole survivors of the Hudson River School.
