Joseph Pennell started his career as an illustrator for Scribners Monthly in 1881. He became friends with James McNeill Whistler in London and began to experiment with new graphic techniques. He collaberated with his wife on illustration and writing of books. He became a teacher at the Art Students League in NY. His work is found in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art Washington DC, California State University Library, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and Guildhall Art Gallery, London.
